How to install
This is a hard install.
But not how you think
This install overall is very simple. But installing the harness through the f hole is the challenging part and is really just a test of your patience. Most people and techs tend to fail at this stage merely because they get frustrated, and cause damage. Just remember, take your time, and do some more research on other strategies if you are struggling
The install
Here's the Guitar Gutted. The only thing you see is the tailpiece ground wire. This wire is very important, so try not to damage it.
Output Jack Install: Part 1 Testing the jack
So, this is mainly when you're installing our harness in an import guitar. But we want to start by confirming that our US Spec output jack can easily fit in the hole. Most cases it will be tight, but inserting the jack a few times will help enlarge the hole
Output Jack Install: Part 2 Fishing the jack
Because the output jacks hole is so far back, we are going to use an old guitar string as a guide. But any fabric based string will work with this. Through the output jack hole, fish the string towards the f hole. once you see it, pull it out.
Pass the string through the output jack and tie it so it won't come off until you pull it super hard. Next pull the jack through the cavity until you can pull it through the output jack hole. Now you can remove the string
Installing Pickups: Part 1 Neck pickup
Since there's a high chance of you moving the guitar a lot, I like to install the pickup rings with a single screw. This way it's secured but can be easily removed.
Install your Neck Pickups "Hot" to the far right lug
50's Wiring
Modern and Treble Bleed
If you are installing Braided wire pickups. its super important that the braided wire is away from this joint
Install your Neck Pickups "Ground" to the casing of the volume.
Repeat these steps with the Bridge pickup and Bridge volume
Again, it's very important the braided wire is away from the hot joint
Finish the installation by adding the Tailpiece ground wire to our Ground path.
On this guitar the tailpiece ground was very close to the Switch, so we added it to our EG1 aka "Extra Ground 1" hole. If that spot doesn't work for you. Solder the tailpiece ground to any pot casing.
Before we install it into the guitar. Let's test it!
Plug the guitar into an amp and test the controls by lightly tapping the pickups with a metal object.
If it works. Let's install the harness
Installing the kit: Part 1 Bridge volume & tone
Installing the kit: Part 1 Neck volume & tone
Because the Neck tone pot is also hard to reach, we are going to do the same trick. This time we are going to tie a thinner String around the pot shaft
Now that everything is installed. Push the Pickup wires back into the cavity Â
And thats it!
Test the controls again before restringing the guitar
